EVIDENCE BASED PRACTICE (EBP)

OBJECTIVES :
At the end of blog you will be able to:
  1. Define evidence based practise
  2. Understand the need of EBP
  3. Enumerate the steps in EBP
  4. Identify atleast 3 databases from which to gather information
DEFINITION:
It is the conscientious, explicit and judicious use of current best evidence in making decision about the care of individual patients. (Sackett et al,1996)

Put simply, it is “using research findings to inform practise”.

WHY EBP ?
  • Demand for maximum quality of care.
  • To assure clients that they will be offered with safest and most effective intervention. Clinical reasoning form the base for planning effective treatment strategies for patients ( Click on the link to understand what is clinical reasoning and it's importance in rehabilitation : https://otpthealthcarerehab.blogspot.com/2020/06/clinical-reasoning-in-rehabilitation.html )
  • Increase therapist’s confidence.
  • Build and maintain respect and trust of clients.
  • Provides platform to use available resources to benefit the health of population.

HOW TO USE EBP ?
5 STEPS IN EBP ARE:

1. Convert information into answerable
questions
2. Search for the evidence to answer the
question.
3. Critically appraise the evidence
4. Apply the evidence
5. Evaluate the practise

STEP 1: ASKING QUESTION
Question can be in relation to:
1. The cause of condition
2. Diagnosis and assessment
3. Prevention of condition
4. Prognosis of condition
5. Treatment outcome
6. Client concern

Example:
• Does constraint induced movement therapy (I) improve UE functional performance (O) compared to NDT therapy (C) in people with upper extremity (UE) paresis s/p CVA (P)?

STEP 2: SEARCH EVIDENCE
Where to look for evidence?
Specialised databases:
• Cochrane
• OTSeeker
• PEDro
• OTCATs

Traditional databases:
• Pubmed
• OTDbase
• CINAHL

STEP 3: CAN I TRUST EVIDENCE?
Critical appraisal:
It is the process of reviewing, assessing, and interpreting evidence by systematically considering its rigour, results and relevance to your own area of practise.

STEP 4 : APPLY EVIDENCE
Apply the evidence to the local population of your practise and clients along with clinical expertise and consider patient’s perspective to
plan the care.

STEP 5: EVALUATE YOUR PRACTISE
  • Monitor the effects of intervention through  documentation.
  • Assess the outcomes of your actions.
  • Reformulate or repeat the above steps if necessary

GETTING EVIDENCE INTO PRACTISE
Lets decide to apply EBP in everyday clinical experience and work for betterment of clients and if anyone doubts your therapy be confident and tell them
